You'll find camping gear, hiking gear, climbing gear, outdoor clothes, tents, sleeping bags. All kinds of cool and "neato" stuff.

I like the name brand stuff prices as well as other brands for even cheaper. The store also offers what they call "Dirt Cheap Emails". Sign up for it and you'll be tempted at least weekly to stop by and pick up a new outdoor toy. Which isn't bad because it's a fun store to wander in. The staff is pretty friendly and though I haven't tried it, they have a pretty technical rock climbing wall.

The Dirt-cheap-emails also anounce when they have blowout sales at season end. I realize that isn't a perfect interpretation of take your bike to work, but for me it is my only realistic option. Currently, I live 60+ miles from my current office. That would take some serious time to ride to work!

Taking my bike to work and leaving it there is a great option for me. I always take a full 1 hour lunch and my office is at the mouth Provo Canyon one of one of the most beautiful canyons on the Wasatch Front. Provo Canyon is home to Bridal Veil Falls and Robert Redford's Sundance Ski Resort. It's already been a lot of fun to have my bike at the office. Just this week, I've used my lunch time to ride on the canyon's Provo River trail system and of course a trip to Subway for a sandwich. It's quick, easy and a great mental break.

I think I'll plans to take a chair-lift ride at Sundance and ride one of the downhill trails on the mountain. I'll also try to ride some dirt trails in the area. I'm not sure how I'll smell after those like that so I'll likely save those for a casual Friday.

Hiking with Sleeping Pills?

KSL, a local news station, reported on a story I thought was funny and odd. It's about a local hiker on a Big Cottonwood Canyon trail in Salt Lake City. According to the report, this is what happened.

"He says he started up the Lake Blanche trail about 5:30 yesterday afternoon, he got to the top, and then he says a storm rolled in complete with heavy rain and wind. Instead of panicking Platt, who says he's an experienced survivalist, decided to make the most of it. He took the sleeping pill at a safe spot, fell sleep and woke up this morning. "

He did what?!?!

I'm not an "experienced survivalist" but that is the last thing I would do. If I'm hiking in the local mountains, I know that my cell phone works in many of these places and I'd take it and use it to call my wife if I'm stuck in a storm. Then, I might wait it out for a while knowing that those that cared knew I were I was and that I was safe.

The frustrating part of this story is that rescue teams and helicopters were out most of the night looking for the sleeper. I wonder if this is the first time this dude as taken a sleeping pill to escape reality. If he's carrying them in his pocket maybe he's addicted. It's too bad so many people had to search for someone that wasn't really lost but just inconsiderate.

One last quote from the article in case you are unsure of what an experienced survivalist should really do.

"Rescuers say generally it's not a good idea to take a sleeping pill when you're lost in the mountains. They say you need to be awake in order to be rescued. They say they were calling his name last night, and say if he was awake he probably would have heard them."

The KSL article was written by Richard Piatt

Motorsports are fun too.

I was excited to hear my name mentioned on the DSO podcast. It made me feel famous :). I hope my last post about the show didn't make me sound anti-hunting or anti-motorized sports. Like I mentioned then, I like them both. For example, I really like riding ATVs and hope to have a pair some day. (It's more fun to ride with some one.) However, not everyone can just run out a buy a pair of four-wheelers. They're expensive. The cost of entry into motor sports is pretty steep. I guess that's one of the many reasons I'm a fan of what I'm calling geosports. Running and hiking are basically free sports. Of course you can gear up as much as you like with packs, clothes and gadgets like a GPS receiver, but you can start small and enjoy it immediately. Kids can do it too.

It's called playing outside. However you choose to play, with or without motors, enjoy where you are. Enjoy the views. Enjoy your friends and family. That's my goal.

This is me on a ATV trip earlier this year. I'm just over half way through the first 11 episodes and can't wait to get through the rest. The show is called "Doing Stuff Outdoors" Each episode is 30 minutes of feel-good outdoor activity. With a home base of New Brunswick, Canada the show has taken me to Mount Bachelor, Oregon; Whistler-Blackcomb, British Columbia and the Appalachian Trail from Maine to Georgia.

In my home state of Utah, an outdoor show is typically less about physical activity and more about hunting and fishing with a dab of camping. Here an "Outdoors Guy" is someone who wears camouflage and drives a big truck with a trailer full of ATVs. I don't see anything wrong with those pursuits and have enjoyed participating in them myself, but I also enjoy the people powered pursuits of hiking, running, biking and even paddling. That's why I enjoy this podcast. It's a show about getting yourself outdoors and doing something active. As Gary, "The Outdoors Guy" puts it

"Outdoor enthusiasts are generally those who enjoy all aspects of the outdoors. They may have a favorite activity like hiking for instance but they also x-c ski in the winter and ride their bike in the summer. ...Outdoor enthusiasts are active people who enjoy life, live it to the fullest and always try to get the most out of every day and everything they do. They aren’t the type to sit on the couch. They’re doers. They aren’t fitness nuts but they know the importance of physical activity and eating properly and try to keep themselves in shape through exercise and diet so they’re able to enjoy the active lifestyle they lead. Outdoor enthusiasts are all these things and much more."

You can tell Gary has been in the radio and TV industry for 30 years as the show is really polished. But you can also tell he loves the outdoors because the stories are personal and interesting. For Utah places I recognized Kings Peak, Timpanogos peak, Bryce Point, Golden Spike -- Last Spike Site, and a Winter Olympics 2002 site.

Ogden Marthon 5k - Can I make it?

Note: This is a post from my other blog ArmchairTriathlete. I wanted to post it here too because I just couldn't decide which blog to post it to.

I started this blog over 2 years ago. Since then I have done a few 5ks, a triathlon, learned to swim and completed a half marathon. I also started weight training, yoga (better stretching really), trail running and hiking.

It's amazing progress really. But as evidenced by my posts on this blog, I'm flaking a bit, I haven't done much in the excercise world since last August. I have two excuses. Having a baby and finishing my basement. The baby is doing great and the basement is done (sort of) and I am left to start over again with fitness. I can't run a mile right now at least not easily anyway.

At work we have a chart that we color in for every 30 minutes of excercise we do. It's a good motivator. Just seeing those spaces next to my name prompts me to walk at lunch.

I know from past experience that a good 5k foot race is a great motivator as well. I've been thinking about doing the Ogden Marathon - Five K for a while now and I'm just under 8 weeks from the starting line. Can I make it?

Here are some details form the site.

Ogden Marathon - Five K

"Date and Time: Saturday, May 19, 2007 – 7:00 a.m.

If your GOAL is to compete in a 5K run, this is the race for you. Participants receive a technical t-shirt, race goody bag, an invitation to the Ogden Marathon Expo and downtown pre-race pasta dinners on Historic 25th Street, and finish line festivities at the Ogden Municipal Park.

Entry Fee
Before April 30th: $25
May 1 - 15th: $35

Start Line
The 5K start is near the Timbermine Restaurant at 1701 Park Blvd. on the Ogden River Parkway. Baby joggers will be allowed, but for safety purposes, they must begin their run at the back of the 5k start line.
Finish Line:
The finish line is at 25th and Grant Ave. at the Ogden Municipal Gardens.
Transportation:"

Canyon Sports Rental Equipment - Hey I know that guy

In high school I worked at a small sporting goods retail store called the Army Navy Economy Store. Although it had a bunch of military surplus we had a good share of outdoor gear. Tents, backpacks, sleeping bags, camping gear and more. The owners of the store also owned Canyon Sports in Salt Lake City. I spent a lot of time looking at all the gear but never really got to use it. I focused instead on the ski gear we carried and spent most weekends skiing Powder Mountain. Years later, I've changed a bit. I don't ski much any more. It's too expensive and I find that I would like to spend more time hiking, biking and running. All relatively free of cost. I would also like to learn some new things like camping and paddling. It appears that the old Army Navy Economy Store has evolved too. They've changed their name to Canyon Sports Outfitters and focus solely on outdoor gear. Now it's a bit ironic that when I was googling around trying to find a place to rent a kayak these guys were the only ones in my neck of the woods. On the Canyon Sports Rental Equipment page I see that I can get a canoe for $20 a day. That's not bad considering the folks at the Great Salt Lake want $30-40. Of course at the Great Salt Lake the boat is already in the water. If I went with the Canyon Sport craft I would have to figure out how to get it to the water. I am sure that is much easier said then done. I think my first attempt will be at the GSL but if I like it or want to paddle some where else I'll give my old employer a shot.

Get a season pass to the Utah State Parks

I recently purchased a season pass to all of the Utah State Parks. It cost a bunch but the break-even point is about 10 visits. So, if I go once a month I've made a good investment. I figure the pass is a good way motivate me to get out and hike all of the trails at Antelope Island this year. I plan on mapping them with my GPS and putting them on EveryTrail.com. If done one already. I can also visit all of the other parks listed here: Utah State Parks & Recreation State Parks Listing. The pass is good for me and up to 7 guests in my car. I can also use it when I ride my bike out to the island as I purchased the Davis County causeway pass as well.

Yippee for me.

A Trail Runner's Blog: Making Your Own Toenail Necklace

A Trail Runner's Blog: Making Your Own Toenail Necklace

This is just too crazy not to link to it.

4-Door Wrangler - I'll call it the official vehicle of GeoSports

Wrangler Unlimited selling strong - Mar. 9, 2007: "It's the new four-door Wrangler Unlimited. And it is definitely not a crossover. The Wrangler is a serious, no-compromise piece of off-road machinery that can, if you want it to, run errands and take the kids to school, too. But it's not really designed for that.

Crossovers ride smoothly, like cars. The Wrangler doesn't. Crossovers are quiet. The Wrangler isn't, especially on the highway. Crossovers don't have rollover cages, removable doors and windshields that can fold down and strap to the hood. The Wrangler does.

When Consumer Reports tested it, the Wrangler Unlimited earned a score of 17 out of a possible 100, the lowest score for any current model. The magazine also noted the Wrangler's "dismal fuel economy."

It did well in the Consumer Report's standardized rock-climbing test, however.
Off-road capability remains extremely impressive," the magazine said in its April issue."

Admittedly, the 4-door looks different. But I like the looks. In a different way. It's got a "I'm-not-afraid-to-get-scratched" look. A "I-belong-on-the-mountain" look. A look you don't get with a Mitsubishi, Nissan or Toyota. It would look really good with some beefy tires.

The thing I like most about it is that it has place for gear. The 2-door Wrangler is tiny. I can put people and gear in this.

But I'll have to wait a few years while some one else knocks some depreciation off of these. I'm not about to spend 25+k for a Jeep that looks like it ought to be out getting scratched. D-SLRs typically offer a 28-85mm equivalent zoom in a standard lens kit, but some all-in-one cameras provide a lens that starts at 24mm (35mm equivalent), most notably the Nikon Coolpix 8400. Fast lenses are easier to find, too. And many of the fixed-lens zoom models accept screw-on tele and wide-angle accessory lenses that provide excellent results"

"Digital SLRs are available for $800 or less, but adding a 7x or longer zoom lens will set you back at least $300 to $400 for even the lowest-priced lenses. You also could think of it this way: Would you prefer to spend eight hundred bucks on the cheapest entry-level D-SLR, or own the best, most sophisticated and fully featured zoom compact camera for the same money?"

My heart is settling on the Canon PowerShot S3 IS. While I ate I stared at a wall mural of the Great Salt Lake. The islands of this dead sea were painted without regard to scale so I could see them all. I don't live far from the road to the lake's largest island, Antelope Island. I enjoy visiting Antelope Island State Park and last year I hiked to the top of it's highest peak. It's a cool place. I'm considering getting an annual park pass so that I'll have an excuse to explore the island trails more often. But staring at this mural reminded me that there is more to this lake then its islands. There is a lot of water out there.

I had some high school friends who tried to row a inflatable raft to the island in the 80's when the causeway to the island was washed out. After several hours of paddling the raft lost all air and sank. They didn't even make it half way. I think they swam/waded back at twice the speed they rowed. I thought they were crazy then and I mostly hold he same opionio now. But looking at the mural and its scale-less island images, I thought about the possibility of rowing from island to island. Is it possible? Am I crazy? How long would it take? Has anyone ever done it?

I think I will find out. The logical starting point will Great Salt Lake Kayak Adventure. They sponsor tours and sea kayak rentals on the Great Salt Lake. I'm dying to try it. According to the site "Sea kayaking is one of the fastest growing outdoor sports in the world. It is low impact on the participant and the environment. Kayaks are efficient, stable, and seaworthy. They allow people of all ages and abilities to enjoy a true wilderness experience. You can observe shore birds and wildlife in an unobtrusive way or simply lose yourself in a sunset. Basic kayaking skills are easy to learn and the experience of propelling yourself across open water is intrinsically rewarding. Most of all you will find that kayaking on the Great Salt Lake is just plain fun."

Wish me luck.

EveryTrail.com

One of my ideas for geosports was to have a site where people could share, via the web, the places in which they play. They'd do it by uploading a gps file to a website and display it on a map with some pictures and stories. Others could comment and even download the file to try on their own.

I have seen several sites that do some of this but many were myopic in the type of activity they promoted. Some are hiking-centric others running-centric etc. I wanted to do more. I like to do more. It would be cool to have a website for all of the outdoor activities people enjoy. It's so much more fun to do a lot of different sports, in a lot of different places. Variety keeps me going and I'm sure there are others that agree.

I found that site today. At first glance, it seems to fit the spirit of what I'm calling geosports. EveryTrail.com is a very cool site that does what I only day-dream of. Check it out. It's far better than my vapor-ware ideas and I'm conceding that it's probably best to leave programming a site like this to someone with far more talent (and time) than I have.

I'll stick to trying to write about the activities I enjoy.

Here is what the site creators envision.

EveryTrail is an online platform that enables you to visualize your travel and outdoor activities and share these with likeminded people from all over the world. With EveryTrail you can easily upload GPS data you recorded while out on the trail and add your photos and notes, to create a visual record of your outdoor activity. EveryTrail was created by a small group of passionate travel and outdoor enthusiasts, out of dissatisfaction with current solutions to share trips with friends and likeminded people. Over the years, we've created numerous personal websites and blogs to share our outdoor adventures with family, friends and other outdoor enthusiasts and while doing so we discovered that standard web technologies are not well-suited for sharing outdoor activities. We believe that the best way to share outdoor activities is to place your photos and notes along your trails. Trails are the essence of outdoor activities and active travel. A picture may say more than a thousand words, but when you place that picture in its geographical context along the trail you followed, you express more about your activity than you could ever express with pictures and words alone.

EveryTrail.com already plays host to many different activities. Here are the popular ones.

Hiking
Running
Road Biking
Walking
Driving
Mountain Biking
Sailing
Trail Running
Alpine Skiing

The performance of the site seems slow but I'm excited about the possibilities. I am planning on exploring the site more and uploading some files. I'll embed them in this blog to share.

It should be noted that I found this site by reading Scott Dunlap's blog post GPS addiction with Motionbased and Everytrail . It's a good read about the future of gps receivers and the activities they'll enhance.

Utah County Peaks: Tallest In Each Of The State's 29 Counties

Utah County Peaks: Tallest In Each Of The State's 29 Counties: "Many peak-baggers have climbed (or wish they could climb) the tallest peaks on each continent, or in each state...well, here's a relatively new goal idea undertaken by growing numbers of people: the highest peak or point in each county. Doing a person's home state is a challenging yet very doable goal because of the relative close proximity of the peaks to each other. Surprising as it might be, Utah has the highest average county peak height of all 50 states, even Alaska. Utah's average county peak height is about 11,222 feet. Colorado ranks second followed by Nevada and Wyoming (Alaska happens to be 6th in spite of Denali). Since some of Utah's 29 counties share a peak (on the county line), there are 26 different peaks to climb"

Hiking Poles

HIKING POLES: "Effectively using two trekking poles reduces fatigue, increases speed (level, uphill and downhill), provides excellent stability, increases the distance that can be comfortably traveled in a day, and reduces accumulated stress on the feet, legs, knees and back by an estimated 8,877+ kg per kilometer (31,500+ lb. per mile).
